Orthodox Church Pilgrimage to Alaska July 8 – 14, 2020

2020 marks the 50th Anniversaries of the Granting of Autocephaly and the Glorification of Saint Herman of Alaska.  As part of the Church-wide celebration of these events, each diocese of the Orthodox Church in America will sponsor a week-long pilgrimage to Alaska during the summer of 2020. Open to all faithful, the pilgrimage features visits to many major Orthodox Christian sites in Kodiak, Kenai and the Anchorage region. Kodiak’s Holy Resurrection Cathedral, in which the relics of Saint Herman are enshrined, and Saint Herman’s Seminary will be part of that event. The pilgrimage also includes an outing to Spruce Island, where Saint Herman lived, prayed, fell asleep in the Lord, and initially buried.

Kodiak King Salmon Derby Slam

Kodiak King Salmon Derby Slam: May 6th

*SIGN UPS AVAILABLE MAY 1ST-5TH

The Kodiak King Salmon Derby’s mission is to “preserve and promote sport fishing opportunities on Kodiak Island. Discover Kodiak believes the 2017 Kodiak King Salmon Derby is an outstanding way to further this goal.

King salmon are the largest, and many of us feel, the most delicious pacific salmon. King salmon are the premier target of many local sport fishermen and visitors from around the world. Unfortunately, the natural king runs on Kodiak Island are at historic lows and this is the case on many rivers state wide.  Sponsoring this derby is one way to acknowledge our roles as consumers in the king salmon world and to help give something back. Proceeds from the derby are dedicated to the king salmon enhancement project currently being conducted by the Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. This project is in its’ 18th year and has successfully added to the king salmon population in waters surrounding Kodiak Island. It has also created a viable freshwater king salmon fishery on the Kodiak road system where before there was none.

Purchase a ticket: Big Ray’s Sport Shop or Discover Kodiak Downtown Visitor Center. Be sure to purchase your tickets prior to fishing.

$20–Tickets must be purchased prior to fishing for salmon.

Each event requires separate entry ticket.

Salmon derby slam requires $200 buy in per boat.

Contestants may buy as many tickets as they would like, however they are non-transferable. Contestants may enter as often as they would like. However, only one salmon per ticket.

Pilgrimage to St. Herman – August 2019

The legacy of St. Herman, now the patron saint of Alaska in the Russian Orthodox Church, lives on long after his death. To this day, pilgrims make the trip to Spruce Island, off the coast of Kodiak, each year in August to visit the hermitage where Herman lived from 1808-1819. Join the hundreds of people that travel to Kodiak to honor the life and canonization of St. Herman of the Russian Orthodox Church by making a pilgrimage to his home on Spruce Island.
